Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave Therapy is a physical therapy which has been shown to be very beneficial for a range of conditions.

These conditions include:

  • Achilles Tendonopathy
  • Tennis elbow (Lateral epicondylitis)
  • Golfers elbow (Medial epicondylitis)
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS)
  • Shoulder Tendonopathy

Benefits of this treatment over other treatments are:

  • Non-invasive
  • No risk of infection
  • Less risk of tendon rupture than steroid injections
  • Effective for most conditions in 3-6 treatments
  • NICE approved

Duiring the initial consultation Shockwave therapy may be suggested to be effective for your condition.

Shockwave therapy can hurt and results are not instant, however, it is fast becoming a leading treatment method used by an increasing number of sports teams, not only for injury treatment but also treatment prevention.

At West Hallam Chiropractic Clinic, we use Swiss Dolorclast machine, which is the machine used in the majority of the studies which show the effectiveness of the shockwave treatment. This machine is more powerful and consistent than its competitors which means treatment is most likely to be more effective meaning less treatments overall.

There are a few things to consider before starting shockwave therapy (or things that may make this treatment unsuitable for you).

These include:

  • If you are pregnant
  • If you are under 18
  • If you are taking some anticoagulents e.g. Warfarin
  • NSAID’s such as Naproxen and Ibuprofen shouldn’t be taken for the duration of shockwave treatment (paracetamol and other types of pain relief are fine)
  • If you have received a steroid injection in the last 6 weeks
  • If the area of the skin is infected or cut/abraded
  • If a tumor is present at the treatment location

Whilst Shockwave therapy helps to treat the cause of the injury, we at West Hallam Chiropractic look to treat the causative factors e.g. why does your elbow pain keep returning?

By treating the causative factors along with the injured tissue we strive to give you the best possible treatment, aiming to return your best and keep you pain free.
